Garage Door Torsion Spring

How to tell the difference at a glance:

The torsion spring is mounted above the door, on the wall

Safe / Intact torsion spring

  • One continuous, tight coil

  • No visible gap in the spring

  • Door feels balanced (can stay halfway open)

  • Cables are tight and even on both sides

Broken torsion spring

  • Clear gap in the spring (often 2–4 inches)

  • Door feels extremely heavy or won’t lift

  • Opener may strain or stop

  • You might hear a loud bang when it breaks

⚠️ Important safety note:

Torsion springs are under extreme tension. Adjusting or replacing one without proper tools and training is genuinely dangerous. This is one of those “don’t DIY” parts—even for handy people.

Garage Door Extension Springs

Signs an Extension Spring Is Failing:

  • Door opens unevenly (one side higher than the other)

  • Door jerks or slams closed

  • Loud bang in the garage

  • Visible separation in the spring

  • Safety cable hanging loose or broken

If one spring breaks, always replace both — they wear evenly and the other one is usually close behind.

⚠️ Safety Note:

Extension springs must have a safety cable running through the center.
Without one, a broken spring can whip across the garage and cause injury or damage.

These are slightly less dangerous than torsion springs to work on — but still under serious tension and not a casual DIY project.
